Remediation system in Wilmington, NC

Mineral Springs Environmental (MSE) was contacted by a gas station owner who was contacted by the owner of a neighboring property who reported smelling gasoline vapors in the building on their property. MSE came on sight and determined that gasoline vapors were entering the building via a sewer line that crossed the gas station site before entering the building on the neighboring property. A site check and limited phase II assessment was preformed on the gas station site, this phase II determined there was contamination impacting the soil and groundwater on site. Monitoring wells were then installed to determine the impact on groundwater, through the monitoring of the wells it was discovered the site had free phase product on the groundwater.

MSE determined a remediation system was necessary to remove the contaminates from the soil and groundwater. Air sparge vaccum extraction was decided upon as the most efficient option to remove contamination. This system consists of 14 air sparge wells. MSE made the decision to install slotted horizontal vacuum lines instead of using vertical wells due the depth of ground water being so shallow. This design allows for maximum air flow and vacuum without drawing excess water into the vacuum system. A total of 360 feet of slotted horizontal vacuum lines were installed and 1500 feet of air sparge lines were installed. Due to constraints on the site for the equipment building size and location MSE design the equipment and the building in such a fashion to fit in the necessary area. A roots blower capable of producing 600cfm at three inches of mercury was installed on the vacuum side of the system. an air compressor capable of producing 110cfm at 125psi was installed for the air sparge portion of the system.
